Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most commonly asked questions, but please feel free to get in contact if you need clarification or your question isn’t here.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), sometimes called a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), is a plan developed with your GP to help manage a range of mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. A MHTP allows you to access up to 10 Medicare rebates per calendar year when seeing a registered psychologist (or mental health accredited social worker).
When you first visit your GP to talk about wanting to see a psychologist, you should book a longer consult as the GP will need time to talk to you about your concerns and together make a decision about the right plan for you, and document this in the MHTP.
Initially, your GP can only write a referral for 6 sessions and you’ll need to return to the GP to access the final 4 sessions in the calendar year. If you need ongoing treatment, you may be able to access a further 10 sessions (6+4) via a MHTP the following calendar year.
A MHTP doesn’t expire unless you’ve used all the rebates associated with the plan.
It’s important that you bring your MHTP to your session or have your GP email it directly Mareeva Psychology (please ask for the direct email address).
This depends on the service provided (as different item numbers attract different rebates). Most standard 50-minute sessions, as at 1 July 2025, will attract a rebate of $98.95.
At the time of consultation, you will pay the full fee, and Mareeva Psychology will process the Medicare rebate on your behalf after full payment is received. Medicare usually remit rebates into your nominated bank account within a few business days.
Please note: Medicare rebates mentioned above apply to therapy only and not formal assessments (e.g., ADHD, cognitive, achievement).
Mareeva Psychology is a small, independent practice focused on providing client-centred care. While bulk billing isn’t offered, I do my best to keep fees as reasonable as possible. In fact, the fees are set well below the Australian Psychological Society’s recommended rate of $318 and the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc’s rate of $330 for a 50-minute session (2025-26).
Therapy:
Standard consultation (50-minutes): $230
Letters & Reports:
For lengthy or complex reports or letters, a fee may apply.
Assessments:
Please enquire, as the costs may vary depending on complexity.
Except in limited circumstances, assessments do not attract Medicare rebates.
Supervision
Please enquire about costs.
All fees are current as at September 2025.
I offer assessments for adults and children (6 years and above).
I have experience conducting ADHD, autism, cognitive, achievement, and other assessments.
The costs for assessments reflect the time taken to conduct interviews, administer and interpret tests, the cost of the tests themselves, and write a report; which is quite time consuming.
No, it’s not necessary to have a referral to see a psychologist either for therapy or an assessment. However, it is essential to have an eligible MHTP in order to claim Medicare rebates for therapy sessions.

Yes, in addition to in-person therapy, I also offer telehealth or telephone sessions as long as you’re in a private and uninterrupted space for the session.
For telehealth sessions, a link will be sent to your nominated email account with instructions.
I want to make sure everyone is treated fairly and has access to sessions within a reasonable timeframe.
If you’re unable to attend your scheduled appointment, please get in contact as soon as possible by email. With enough notice, the appointment may be offered to another client seeking an appointment.
Cancellations made with 48 hours’ or less notice incur a 50% fee, and notice 24 hours or less incur the full fee, as it’s not feasible to rebook that time at short notice.

Unless otherwise agreed, payment is required at the time of your consultation.
If there’s an outstanding balance, further appointments are unable to scheduled until payment has been received in full. Assessment reports are released only once full payment has been processed, and are typically provided within five business days of payment.
We are able to take payment at the time of the consultation via terminal (payWave VISA, Mastercard, American Express, or insert/swipe EFTPOS cards). For Telehealth appointments, payments are securely processed via Stripe on the Zanda platform (which also accepts American Express, VISA, and Mastercard). In limited circumstances, bank transfer may be arranged. Please contact us in advance if this is required.
Receipts are issued automatically after payment via email. If you require a printed invoice, just ask.
Mareeva Psychology can process Medicare rebates on your behalf, but cannot process private health rebates directly. Please speak with your health fund to confirm eligibility and rebates as these will vary depending on your level of cover and individual fund.
If payment is missed, a reminder will be sent via email. There are no late fees applied, but timely payment helps us maintain availability for all clients.
These policies help maintain fairness, transparency, and timely access to care. If you’re experiencing financial difficulty, please reach out.
